Game time. Yay!
Okay, guys, so this is the section where I put down games here every week that either I remember from my childhood, or ones that I think are really good, and need your attention.
Week of Nov. 28-So, this week's game is Golden Sun! Golden Sun is an RPG for the GBA that is widely regarded as one of the best games on the system. It has two sequels, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, and Golden Sun Dark Dawn. Lost Age is in my opinion, the best of the three, but we're going to talk about the first one, just because.
So the game's main protagonist is Isaac, of Vale. Isaac and his companions are Adepts, people who have control over the four standard elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. After a massive storm, and several boulders falling from Mt. Aleph, the mountain neighboring Vale, Isaac's friend Felix, his parents, and Isaac's father are all thought to have drowned. Three years later, an alchemy sage of the name Kraden comes to Vale. Isaac, and his friends Garet and Jenna, begin to learn of alchemy by studying under him. Upon exploring Sol Sanctum, a sacred temple relating to alchemy, they encounter four mysterious figures, one of which, is a familiar face. These four steal the Elemental Stars, items used to unleash the powers of alchemy through four Elemental Lighthouses. After being saved by the god-like Wise One, Isaac and Garet are given the task of preventing to dangerous powers of alchemy to be unleashed on the land.
The game itself is very enjoyable to play. It is a turn based RPG, so the combat has some level of strategy to it. But, when not in combat, you must use your powers, dubbed Psynergy, to solve a variety of puzzles. This gives the game a level of thought and fun outside of beating stuff up.
Similar to other RPGs, the game uses a class-system. However, in this game, classes are merely a title, and can be changed at any time through the use of Djinn. Djinn are physical entities of Elemental energy. There are four different types of Djinn; one for for each element. by moving your Djinn from character to character, you can change their powers and statistics, such as HP, attack, ect.
Overall, I highly suggest picking this game up.
Week of Dec. 3
So, today we're looking at another Nintendo game(Get used to it)
Today, we look at Kirby's Return To Dreamland.
Kirby is a series of games which mainly consist of 2D sidescrolling platformers. This game is no different. I enjoy it nonetheless. So from now on, after that first game, Golden Sun, we're going to start looking at games in three lights. Presentation, Story, and Gameplay. Sound good? Too bad.
Story: So, in Kirby, you get a pretty basic plot. This is, again, no exception. Essentially, the story goes that Kirby, and his pals, King Dedede, Bandana Dee, and Meta Knight, are all just strollin' about, ready to eat some cake, when suddenly, a starcutter falls from the sky, it's parts scattering all over planet Popstar(I'm not joking, that's seriously the planet name). Rushing inside, Kirby and Co. find an alien by the name of Magolor(whose name for some reason reminds me of a power rangers villain) who eaxplains that he needs help to retrieve his power cells, in the form of energy spheres, and ship parts.
Presentation: This is a Nintendo Wii game, so graphics in general are not a problem. The game looks very nice, visuals ranging from fiery mountains, to frozen wastelands, to grassy plains, to metal factories. It's very easy to tell what's background, and what's interactive. The enemies are also diverse, and when swallowed in standard Kirby fashion, Kirby will take on new powers and a new appearance. If I had to choose a personal favorite enemy, it would visually be Sir Kibble, whereas my favorite Kirby visually is the Beam Kirby.
Gameplay: So, it's a 2D platformer, like a lot of NES games. So, as you can guess, the objective, is to get from one side of te screen, to the other. Sorta. There's some really creative stuff that goes into this process. The game has optional drop-in/drop-out co-op, meaning that your friends can join in the fun whenever, and leave, whenever. player one will always be Kirby, which offers the most diverse game experience. Players 2-4 have the option to play as a different color Kirby, or either Spear Dee, King Dedede, or Meta Knight. There are about 20 different Copy Abilities Kirby can wield, and King Dedede wields the Hammer Ability permanently, Meta Knight is a Combination of both the Wing and Sword Abilities, and Random Filler Dee wields the Spear ability always. To progress through the game, you must collect all the ship parts, and then go to Holocondra to engage the Final Boss. to 100% the game, you need to do that, and collect all 120 Energy Spheres, AND complete the challenges unlocked from doing so.
Overall: So, I enjoy the game very much, and I still play it to this day (as of Dec. 3 2012). I would recommend this, but, it is very much set in the ways of classic Kirby. If you don't like the classic Kirby experience, you will not like this game. Some games can be very unique, like Mass Attack or Epic Yarn, but this follows the traditional Kirby formula that I think works so well. I enjoy it, but if you don't like other Kirby games, you won't like this one. But come on, who doesn't like Kirby? I mean, look at him. See, see his adorable fighting pose that I have on my banner.
